Ralph is product, material and innovation specialist at Urban Iki and is involved in everything needed to bring a child bike seat from idea to finished product. From material selection and production to quality and delivery, he ensures everything is right.
Much of his knowledge of materials and product development comes from his father Ronald, founder of Urban Iki. That many years of experience form the foundation of his work today.
That knowledge is consciously passed on within Urban Iki. Where Ronald laid the foundation, Ralph and his brother Aron build on it every day. Not by simply copying it, but by translating it into how products are designed, tested and produced today.
“You learn how something was originally created, but you always look at how it can be improved. That’s what we focus on every day.”
Together they represent the next generation within the company. While Ralph focuses on product, materials and production, Aron looks at the market, mobility and developments in the cycling world. This combination creates a strong balance between what is made and what is needed.
“We complement each other well. In the end, we work towards the same goal: a product that works from start to finish.”
Materials that go beyond the standard
At Urban Iki, nothing is left to chance when it comes to materials. Everything used is extensively tested in our own facilities, in conditions that replicate real life and often go far beyond it.
From extreme heat and UV exposure to prolonged cold, materials must withstand situations users may never even encounter.
“We want to be absolutely sure it always performs. Even in situations you wouldn’t immediately think of.”
Ralph also works closely with suppliers to ensure materials meet all requirements and certifications. Every detail is checked to guarantee quality.
From design to a product that works
Urban Iki products are assembled in the company’s own facility in Nijverdal. For Ralph, this is essential. It provides control over quality and allows the team to act quickly when needed.
The assembly process follows the Japanese Kaizen principle, a way of working that focuses on structure, clarity and continuous improvement. It serves as a daily guide for the team and helps keep processes efficient and reliable.
Together with Japanese colleagues from OGK, Ralph continuously works on improving materials, techniques and product details. While they bring deep expertise in technology and production processes, Ralph ensures everything aligns with the needs of users in Europe.
“It’s not just about designing something well. It also has to be made well. That’s where it all comes together.”
Improving every single day
Ralph constantly looks for ways to improve. Can a product be easier to use? Smarter to produce? More sustainable? Every part of the process is examined.
Insights from the market, customer service and trade shows are actively used to guide improvements. This ensures innovations always reflect real life use.
“The best insights come from real life. That’s what you need to keep listening to.”
Cycling the way it’s meant to be
Beyond his technical role, Ralph is also a father. With a daughter who is almost ready for a rear seat, he naturally looks at products from a personal perspective.
His advice to parents is clear: make sure you ride safely, for example by wearing a helmet. Especially with the rise of e-bikes. But above all, don’t forget to enjoy it.
“That first ride together… it’s something special. You see everything through their eyes.”
Growing as a brand and as a family
What Ralph is most proud of is the growth of Urban Iki. Not just as a brand, but as a community.
More and more parents are discovering the brand in more and more countries. And with every new user, the Urban Iki family continues to grow.
“You know you’re contributing to all those moments parents and children share on the bike. That’s what makes the work truly meaningful.”
