5 tips for a safe ride to school
Back to school! Will you be cycling to school with your little one this year? Perhaps your eldest will be able to cycle by himself this school year, or the youngest might join you on the front of your bike for the first time. Whatever your routine looks like, dropping off and picking up your children at the school yard is an unforgettable experience. Think of those warm hugs, or the beautiful stories about new friends or the new group. Along the way, your little ones will tell you all about their day! Of course you want to make those bicycle rides to school as safe as possible. That’s why Urban Iki gives you 5 useful tips to stay safe in traffic.
Put a helmet on!
A helmet is the easiest way to enhance safety on the bike. Do you already have an Urban Iki seat and are you considering a helmet for your little one? Urban Iki helmets are so comfortable that your children will barely notice them. The helmets are available for babies, toddlers and preschoolers.
Cycling with children in a front and rear seat
Do you have a child at both the front and the back of your bike? Then you should check whether the standard of your bicycle is still in good shape, because it’s crucial when putting in or removing your little ones from the seats. Another option is to use the bicycle rack in the schoolyard.
Thanks to the convenient design of Urban Iki bike seats, you can secure the safety straps with just one hand. With your other hand you can keep your bike stable. That way, your bike won’t just fall over. The strap can only be unclipped with both hands so your little one can’t do it by himself.
School bags on the bike
Of course, a school bag with food and drinks should be taken along on the bike. Does your child hold the bag on its lap or does it dangle from your handlebars with the risk of getting in between your wheels? Then it’s high time for another approach! Urban Iki backpacks are designed to be attached securely to the back of the rear seat. You can store a lunch box and drinking cup in the backpacks. Ideal for school! And if your little one is getting homework for the first time, everything easily fits in the spacious Urban Iki backpack for kids.
Cycling to school for the first time
Is your little one ready to ride to school on his own bicycle? Exciting, a new step on the way to getting big! But be careful: your kid probably doesn’t know all the traffic rules or know how to act in unexpected situations. Therefore, we advise you to explore the route to school a few times on a weekend. Choose a quiet moment, such as a Sunday morning. That way, your child gets to know the route without too much traffic. And when they already know the route, they can focus more on the other traffic.
Cycling with more than one child
If your little ones are already cycling on their own, you always keep them on your right. You can put your hand on their shoulder to guide them through a dangerous intersection, or give an extra push on a tough climb. If things have been going well for a while, you can cycle behind your child. This gives you a good overview, and allows them to cycle more freely. With two cycling children, you should ride behind them for the same reasons. Are you already looking forward to those nice and safe bike rides to school? After school you cycle home together, or you go to the petting zoo. Moments you will never forget!
