The right child bike helmet: how to find the perfect size

The size of a children’s bike helmet is based on head circumference, measured in centimetres. Every helmet comes with a size range printed on the label, such as 44–48 cm or 48–52 cm. The letters XS, S and M can vary quite a bit between brands, so always go by the centimetre measurement. It’s the only number that stays consistent across different makes. Stick to the centimetres, and you’ll never go wrong.

Here’s how to measure your little one’s head at home:

• Use a soft, flexible tape measure
• Wrap it just above the ears, across the forehead and around the back of the head
• Measure twice to be sure
• If the measurement falls between two sizes, always choose the larger one

Children grow quickly, and the larger size gives more comfort now while lasting a little longer too. A correctly sized kids’ bike helmet sits firmly without pressing.
