Making the production process more sustainable at Urban Iki

We believe that every child deserves to grow up in a healthy, green living environment. It is our job to protect and care for both as best we can. Looking forward to the future of our earth, looking back to that little one in his safe bicycle seat. That is why we think more and more about a sustainable production process. We send smart packaging, reuse materials and recently introduced the Urban Iki bio bicycle seats. In this way, we make our production process more sustainable step by step. Read here how we work.

Our sustainable Japanese-inspired motto

Because our roots are in Japan, it is part of our brand and our products. In the Japanese language, there is a word for the feeling of regret when something valuable is wasted: ‘mottanai’. It is a motto that we try to be aware of every day. It reminds us to protect the place we live in, and improve the world around us.

Reuse of packaging materials

We assemble all Urban Iki products in our own building in the Netherlands. This means that only small parts with less volume are shipped internationally. The packaging materials of these parts are recyclable. That is why Urban Iki reuses this packaging for the total products. In this way, less material is wasted, and we prevent a surplus of waste during our production process

Smart packaging

Many products are still shipped in oversized packaging. A shame, because this causes unnecessary extra emissions. With just a little more attention, Urban Iki wants to pack and ship products more efficiently. That is why we do not use more packaging material than necessary and we ensure that there is as little space as possible in our packaging. The design of our packaging has been carefully measured so that the shells of the Urban Iki bicycle seats fit exactly in the box. The leg parts are in the box as a separate part, which means that we are able to reduce the packaging by up to half. In addition, the boxes are made of recycled cardboard. Because we were aware of this smart design at an early stage, we now ship Urban Iki products more sustainably. And that bicycle seat by bicycle seat, every day. That is a nice step towards a greener world!

Efficient local production

Because the assembly of our products takes place in our own energy-neutral building in the Netherlands, we produce more sustainably. We do not use international mass transport and are more independent of external parties. We let you do the last step of the assembly yourself. This makes it possible to keep our packaging small and compact without compromising the safety of our products. We are also more free to apply your feedback directly to our products. We can perform product optimizations more easily locally. Furthermore, we are in control of the shipment from our storage to your home. We arrange this with PostNL, who also does everything they can to emit less CO2.

Production building energy neutral

Our production location is energy neutral thanks to solar panels. Because of the solar panels on our building, we can provide ourselves with energy and we also use it to control the heat pumps. So we do not use gas, but instead give electricity back. In this way we want to further reduce our CO2 emissions during the production process. The balance of our solar panels is always positive: we do not consume more electricity than the solar panels produce. Of course, we are very happy with that!

Use of sustainable materials

It is becoming increasingly important for us to work on a sustainable relationship with the environment. Now is the ultimate time to help people make the sustainable choice. Everyone can contribute something. Our new bio bicycle seats are therefore a dream come true. We opted for partially bioplastic, produced from rice husk. A material that is close to our Japanese roots! These bicycle seats are produced in the best possible way for both earth and child. This is only the first step, and we are happy to take you on a journey into the future. For next generations.
